Born in Kent, England in 1869, Simpson spent five years in the London office of Sir Arthur W. Blomfield before joining the New York office of Ralph Admas Cram and Bertram Goodhue. Responding to a job advertisement, he became an assistant to W.H. Tine in the design of Henry and Clara Ford's Fair Lane estate.
